Bullying Statistics – Needham MA

According to a Needham Youth Services survey from Needham MA, 10th graders are most likely to be victims of bullies. 7th graders came in with the second highest statistics for bullying with 32% claiming they were bullied.

ADHD Medications & Cardiac Death / Heart Problems

Studies suggest that medications for treatment of ADHD may increase risk of sudden cardiac death in children. Various medical associations recommend that children be screened for heart problems before starting these types of drugs. In fact it has been reported to us by a family we tutor that her son had to go off Ritalin immediately due to his heart racing for no apparent reason.

Tourette’s Symptoms

Tourette’s usually involves:

1. Tics: along a range of simple (e.g., rapid eye-blinking, facial grimacing, shoulder-shrugging) to complex (involving several muscle groups, such as hopping, bending, or twisting).

2. Vocalizations: also along a range of simple (throat-clearing, sniffing, grunting) to complex (involving words or phrases).

Special Needs Play Dates

If your child has certain special needs issues and is invited by a friend to a play date, try to include them as much as possible in environments where they have the best chances of success. If a play date would be more successful at home, you may accept the invitation but ask if it is OK for them to come over to your house instead.

Sleep & Smartphones

Constantly checking emails or surfing the web on a smartphone can stimulate the brain. Doing so right before bed with a smartphone can prevent kids from falling asleep. If your child has difficulty falling asleep, try limiting smartphone use before bed.

Sleep & Room Temperature

Some kids have difficulty falling asleep when the room is too warm. Keeping the body cool slows down all of the metabolic processes. Try lowering the temperature of the room if your child has insomnia.

Sleep & Allergies / Asthma Insomnia

Sometimes insomnia can be from asthma and allergies. If your child has difficulty sleeping due to these, the underlying cause may be dust mites living in the mattress. You may try a mite resistant casing for your child’s bed and pillow.
