Back To School Success #8: Backpack Supplies

September 14, 2016 By Y3K

After completing a periodic backpack clean out, taking a supply inventory helps students stay organized as well. Make sure there are enough pencils in the bag so your student doesn’t have to waste class time and lose focus trying to borrow one from a friend. Also make sure there are enough pens, paper and markers/highlighters. If a calculator is needed for class, place it in a part of the backpack where your student will find it and turn it on to check the batteries.

Back To School Success #7: Clean Out Backpack

September 13, 2016 By Y3K

Has the following scenario ever happened to your student? They claim they have completed an assignment, but they cannot find it. The class then reviews the assignment but your student is not able to go over their work with the class and feels upset that they can’t participate in discussions. How about this scenario? Your student’s important papers end up being crumpled up messes. Y3K Tutor In Your Home tutors and classroom teachers notice frequently students anxiously looking through disorganized backpacks for missing assignments. This lack of organization often occurs with students that have executive function and ADD/ADHD issues. It is important to stay on top of this issue, as it can be the main cause of poor homework and classwork grades. Some students even use class time searching for items rather than focusing on their work.

Whether a student has organizational issues or not, their backpacks should be cleaned out and maintained at least every month if not sooner. It is essential that your student keep track of assignments, permission slips, notices and other items needed. Sometimes important papers are found buried at the bottom of the bag or placed in the wrong section.

Children that are prepared for school each day and organized tend have reduced stress and anxiety. We tutor students with organizational issues and teach how to be organized so call Y3K Tutor In Your Home today!

Back To School Success #6: Social Media and Electronics

September 12, 2016 By Y3K

Texts, emails and phone calls can not only make homework time become longer, but may lower the quality and thoroughness of the work. In fact these distractions could cause 45 min of homework to be stretched out to 2 hours. Many kids (and adults) are addicted to checking social media and texts. As parents, it is up to you to help them remain focused on their work.

One way to do this is to allow them a 5-minute break after finishing an assignment to check their emails/texts/social media. Then have them go back to work on the next assignment. Allow them another 5-minute social media break and follow this pattern until all assignments are completed. Another take off on this idea would be instead of alternating breaks between assignments; you could have them work 20 minutes and then 5 minutes off. Follow the time pattern until all assignments are done. This will allow students to focus on schoolwork and satisfy the urges most people have to attend to their social media or texting.

Back To School Success #5: Divorce

September 11, 2016 By Y3K

If a student lives in two separate homes due to their parents being divorced, sometimes the moving back and forth can cause problems completing assignments. Sometimes children will leave textbooks at one house and forget to take them to the other parent’s house. A solution to this problem is to ask the school if your student can receive 2 copies of each book (1 for each home). This creates a lot less stress for the child and they will always have the resources they need at both homes.

Back To School Success #4: Teacher’s Website For Parents

September 10, 2016 By Y3K

The class website is a great tool for both parents and students. Often when a parent asks their children what they learned in school today, the common response is “nothing”. You as parents should check the teacher’s website often so you can discuss with your children material covered in class or general information on how your child spent the day. The website gives you specific questions you can ask your student such as “What facts did you learn in the whale video you watched today?” or “What did you think of the guest speaker today?”

Back To School Success #3: Teacher’s Website For Students

September 9, 2016 By Y3K

The class website is an important tool for students. It allows the student to stay up to date with all happenings in the classroom such as homework, upcoming tests, projects, and special activities. It is important that your child reviews each teacher’s site daily. The teacher’s website is essential for students with executive function issues and have difficulty writing down their assignments or do not remember all or parts of a particular assignment.
