Back-To-School Shoe / Sneaker Shopping Tips

August 30, 2017 By Y3K

Here are some important tips when back-to-school shoe/sneaker shopping:

1.  Have your kids try on shoes at the end of the day or after a workout when feet are swelled.

2.  There must be at least a half-inch of space between the longest toe and the tip of the shoes. Make sure there is plenty of room to wiggle the toes inside each shoe.

3.  Always lace the shoes when trying them on.

4.  When trying on shoes, have your student wear the type of socks they would normally be wearing.

5.  Walk and run in the shoes on different surfaces like tile or carpet to make sure they are comfortable. They should not require breaking in.

Back To School Success #8: Backpack Supplies

September 14, 2016 By Y3K

After completing a periodic backpack clean out, taking a supply inventory helps students stay organized as well. Make sure there are enough pencils in the bag so your student doesn’t have to waste class time and lose focus trying to borrow one from a friend. Also make sure there are enough pens, paper and markers/highlighters. If a calculator is needed for class, place it in a part of the backpack where your student will find it and turn it on to check the batteries.

Back To School Success #7: Clean Out Backpack

September 13, 2016 By Y3K

Has the following scenario ever happened to your student? They claim they have completed an assignment, but they cannot find it. The class then reviews the assignment but your student is not able to go over their work with the class and feels upset that they can’t participate in discussions. How about this scenario? Your student’s important papers end up being crumpled up messes. Y3K Tutor In Your Home tutors and classroom teachers notice frequently students anxiously looking through disorganized backpacks for missing assignments. This lack of organization often occurs with students that have executive function and ADD/ADHD issues. It is important to stay on top of this issue, as it can be the main cause of poor homework and classwork grades. Some students even use class time searching for items rather than focusing on their work.

Whether a student has organizational issues or not, their backpacks should be cleaned out and maintained at least every month if not sooner. It is essential that your student keep track of assignments, permission slips, notices and other items needed. Sometimes important papers are found buried at the bottom of the bag or placed in the wrong section.

Children that are prepared for school each day and organized tend have reduced stress and anxiety. We tutor students with organizational issues and teach how to be organized so call Y3K Tutor In Your Home today!

Back To School Success #3: Teacher’s Website For Students

September 9, 2016 By Y3K

The class website is an important tool for students. It allows the student to stay up to date with all happenings in the classroom such as homework, upcoming tests, projects, and special activities. It is important that your child reviews each teacher’s site daily. The teacher’s website is essential for students with executive function issues and have difficulty writing down their assignments or do not remember all or parts of a particular assignment.

Back To School Success #1: Homework Space

September 7, 2016 By Y3K

The first question to ask yourself is, “Where does your child do their homework on a consistent basis?” Then ask yourself, “Where does your child keep their laptop, tablet, and/or cell phone while they are doing their homework?” If the answer to both questions is the same location, then this may cause a lot of problems. Students require a quiet place to do their homework without interruptions.

Some children (and adults) struggle with putting aside social media and texting, so it is up to the parents to monitor this activity during homework time. One solution is to have them do their homework within view such as at the dining room table. Another solution would be to keep all the electronics in a separate location when they are doing homework in a private room such as their bedroom or study room.

New School Year Success Tip #1: Stop Over-Scheduling

August 29, 2016 By Y3K

As a society, we tend to feel obligated to fill every hour of our children’s days with activities. Physical and creative outlets such as sports, art, theater and music are something every child needs, however not at the expense of their education. If school is suffering due to lack of homework and study time because of outside activities, some activities should be cut. Education must be the priority.
