Reopening Schools: Where Are Extra Teachers Coming From?

July 9, 2020 By Y3K

Due to social distancing measures, schools will need extra teachers for extra classrooms. The following is from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) about how to find more classroom teachers for reopening schools in the fall:

Staffing alternatives to consider for reducing class sizes:  Specialist teachers and other educators such as instructional coaches, reading specialists, and others who have appropriate certifications may be enlisted to serve as additional core teachers to reduce class sizes in schools.

PARENTS AGREE: Y3K TUTOR IN YOUR HOME CHANGES LIVES #31

February 26, 2020 By Y3K

Our Y3K Tutor In Your Home tutor has been terrific for my 7th grader with executive function and decoding issues. He met a boy frustrated about school, quickly established a great rapport and turned him into a boy with some confidence that he could meet the demands of 7th grade. It is an ongoing process.  Our tutor helps each week with organization of materials and assignments and working on homework where a little more explanation is needed.  He has been particularly helpful in helping with writing assignments, getting my son to think through the question, his argument and then really thoroughly explaining and supporting his arguments.  Before he was struggling to write 3 paragraphs, and now he is checking to make sure he has articulated every thought clearly.  Our tutor’s support each week reinforces the lessons and keeps my son on track and organized.  His grades have come up, but most importantly he is confident in himself as a student and is engaging more with teachers during the day.

ADHD in Girls Overlooked

November 7, 2017 By Y3K

Many girls are overlooked for ADHD diagnosis and treatment.  The reason is that even though they may struggle in school, they have good relationships with their peers and teachers like them.  Many adult women are diagnosed only when they take their children to be evaluated and realize they may be suffering from ADHD too.

ADHD in Girls

November 6, 2017 By Y3K

Many young girls and women have a subtype called predominantly inattentive ADHD.  They may seem flighty or spacy but are not hyperactive.  This might not raise a red flag with teachers or parents.  As a result, girls often go without treatment until they reach adulthood.  The use of ADHD medication among women ages 26 to 34 has risen 85% in just 5 years!

Tomorrow we will look at why girls are frequently overlooked for treatment.

Homework Help #5

October 19, 2017 By Y3K

Sometimes students struggle with homework because of learning difficulties, not because they don’t want to do the work. If you suspect this, act at once. Some options include contacting the teacher, calling the special education department and requesting a neuropsychological evaluation, you the parent working with your student at home, or calling a Y3K Tutor In Your Home tutor to catch them up and move them forward.

Classroom Difficulties (Part 8: Never Tell)

September 19, 2017 By Y3K

An extremely important thing to note is the child should not be told they are personally being observed. People that know they are being observed tend to step up their game. The teacher should notify the students that someone is visiting the class to observe the teacher or may have a student in the class next year and seeing how they do things.

Is your student mislabeled as special needs or a behavior problem? Tomorrow we will address this as our series on classroom difficulty continues.

Classroom Difficulties (Part 7: No Parents Allowed)

September 18, 2017 By Y3K

The person doing the observation should not be the parent either as students behave differently when their parents are present or when they know they are being observed. Talk to the principal and ask if the observer can be another teacher, principal, special education director, Y3K Tutor In Your Home tutor, or other trained professional. The observer should make note of times when the child is cooperating as well as having difficulty. The entire classroom environment should be observed.

What is the one thing that could ruin the entire observation process? What must be done by the teacher to make sure the classroom observation is not sabotaged? Check back tomorrow for the shocking answers!

Classroom Difficulties (Part 6: Part of the Process)

September 17, 2017 By Y3K

The second reason the teacher should never conduct the classroom observation is because they are a part of the process being evaluated. The teacher could be the one causing the student to have difficulty in the classroom in the first place. The observer needs to be able to see all aspects of the classroom including the students and the teacher all with an open mind.

Tomorrow we will take a closer look at exactly who should and should not be conducting the classroom observation.

Classroom Difficulties (Part 4: Classroom Observation)

September 15, 2017 By Y3K

A teacher may notify a parent that there are issues a student needs to address in the classroom. This could include lack of focus, silliness or emotional distress. Sometimes the teacher may be right as there could be classroom bullies or the teacher themselves may be causing problems for your student. In order to find out the exact cause of your student’s problems, a classroom observation by someone other than the teacher is important. Students can benefit from being closely observed in the classroom due to the information collected that would otherwise remain unknown. One important thing to remember is that the teacher must never be allowed to do this observation.

Why can’t the teacher be allowed to conduct the observation? There are two reasons why. Can you guess? Check back tomorrow for the surprising answers!
