• Limited-slip or Martingale collars of all sizes
• Non-clumping, clay cat litter
• Litter box deodorizer
• Bleach, laundry detergent, liquid dish soap, sponges
• Waterless hand sanitizer
• New, standard-sized litter boxes (no hood)
• Rubbing alcohol and distilled water
For the Cats and Kittens:
• Science Diet brand dry food
• Canned cat food (any brand, not shredded variety)
• Blankets and soft cat beds
• Towels
• Toys (squeaky toys, balls, stuffed mice, fishing pole toys, catnip)
For the Dogs and Puppies:
• Science Diet brand dry food
• Canned dog food (any brand or variety)
• Leashes (4, 6, or 8-foot; not the retractable kind)
• Toys (squeaky & plush toys; no tennis balls/rope toys)

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association recently made a decision to reinstate boys’ gymnastics after deciding to eliminate it earlier in the year. The change of heart came about after an uproar of letters and petitions demanding the MIAA bring the sport back. This ruling affects several cities and towns including Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s City of Newton. Both Newton North High School and Newton South High School currently have boys’ gymnastics teams.

The animals need your help. You can make a difference for the Buddy Dog Humane Society’s animal shelter. Please help Y3K Tutor In Your Home aid abused and abandoned dogs and cats. Please donate old or new towels, blankets, office supplies, and animal toys. Items will be picked up at your home between November 1, 2013 and January 1, 2014.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative will trigger a higher level of critical thinking and deeper understanding into your child’s curriculum. There will also be a new standardized test in English and math. The Common Core benchmarks will be supported by one of two new standardized tests in the 2014-2015 school year.

Another major change due to Common Core State Standards Initiative to be on the lookout for is in math. Students will be required to show more work in solving math problems. New public school standards for learning called the Common Core State Standards Initiative will launch this fall in 45 states across the United States including Massachusetts. There will be changes in your child’s education due to the new standards. One of the major changes will be the inclusion of more nonfiction reading and persuasive writing in all grades. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a set of standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in the subjects of English and math that the states voluntarily adopt. 45 states including Massachusetts have signed on. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter college or the workforce. They claim that the standards are “ . . . clear and concise to ensure that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of the expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics in school.” It remains to be seen if this is in fact true. Tomorrow we will take a closer look at some of the changes coming soon.
