Executive Function and COVID-19

May 4, 2020 By Y3K

There is a special part of our brain that is responsible for executive function skills.  These skills include our ability to organize, plan ahead, and especially important in this day and age of COVID-19 . . . our ability to sense danger.  The problem is that this all takes place in the prefrontal cortex and this area of the brain does not fully develop until we are well into our 20’s.

Therefore children and teens may not sense COVID-19 danger and choose not to social distance.  It is up to us as responsible parents to monitor and keep our kids safe.  We need to make sure our teens are following social distancing. It is your responsibility as a parent to make sure they follow the rules even when they are out in public places like a field, playground, or hanging out with their friends.

ADD/ADHD Focus Strategy #5: Standing

September 23, 2016 By Y3K

Some students lose focus sitting but can find it easier to pay attention in class when they are standing. By standing they are using their muscles, stimulating blood flow and increasing oxygen uptake. Standing or adjustable desks have allowed the students that feel “antsy” all the time, to focus in class.

ADD/ADHD Focus Strategy #4: Resistance Bands

September 22, 2016 By Y3K

Students with impulsivity issues often focus on movement and tend to not pay attention to their learning. School desks and chairs can be modified to accommodate students with ADHD impulsivity issues. Resistance bands around the legs of the desk or the legs of their chair allow the student to kick and get their energy out. They use their muscles to push against the bands allowing them to satisfy their need for stimulation and maintaining focus in class.

ADD/ADHD Focus Strategy #3: Balance Disc

September 21, 2016 By Y3K

An inflatable balance disc is another item that is great for students with ADD/ADHD. The balance disc is placed on top of their regular chair. Due to the instability of the balance disc, it forces the core muscles to be used to maintain proper posture. This in turn leads to increased focus when learning.

ADD/ADHD Focus Strategy #2: Ergonomic Stool

September 19, 2016 By Y3K

Sitting on an ergonomic stool is another way of actively sitting using the core muscles. Being active in this manner stimulates more of the brain-body connection. This can lead to more focus in the classroom.

ADD/ADHD Focus Strategy #1: Exercise Ball

September 18, 2016 By Y3K

An exercise ball that would usually be found in a gym is a great substitute for the traditional school chair. Sitting on this giant ball requires the student to sit in the proper posture to stay balanced. This forces them to use their core muscles. When students are using their energy to actively sit, they tend be more attentive and focused.

Hard Work & Risks

December 6, 2015 By Y3K

We must be willing to do hard work.  We must be willing to take risks. This can be a daunting task.  We may ask ourselves, “What if I put in all of my time and energy into this hard work and fail?  What if it’s all for nothing?  What if people laugh at me?”

Quiet those negative voices.  We have to give 100%.  We can’t give up.

Summer Water Safety

July 7, 2014 By Y3K

A child can drown in as little as one inch of water. Even if your child knows how to swim, watch them closely any time they are in or near water.

MIAA Brings Gymnastics Back To Newton

October 29, 2013 By Y3K

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association recently made a decision to reinstate boys’ gymnastics after deciding to eliminate it earlier in the year. The change of heart came about after an uproar of letters and petitions demanding the MIAA bring the sport back. This ruling affects several cities and towns including Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s City of Newton. Both Newton North High School and Newton South High School currently have boys’ gymnastics teams.
