Here is the complete list of items collected for the Y3K Tutor In Your Home 16th Annual Buddy Dog Humane Society Collection Drive.  There are three convenient drop-off locations.  Pick-ups are the first Saturday of each month.  Our collection drive is from November 1st to January 10th.  Call now!

Most Needed Items:

  • Martingale collars of all sizes

  • Bleach

  • Non-clumping, clay cat litter

  • Laundry detergent

  • Canned dog food (any brand or variety)

  • Plastic storage bins in medium and large sizes with lids!

  • Instinct Brand Rabbit Formula (Wet and Dry) Cat food

For the Cats and Kittens:

  • Canned cat food (any brand, but not the shredded variety)

  • Towels

  • Fishing pole toys

  • Small, rubber-bottom bath mats for cats who shred their newspaper (New or gently used)

  • Non-clumping, clay cat litter

For the Dogs and Puppies:

  • Special Diets:

    • ​Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Venison dog food

    • Hill’s K/D

    • Low-fat, low-calorie, or high-fiber

    • Hills Science Diet ID canned dog food and kibble!

  • Sturdy leashes, 6-foot and 8-foot

  • Toys (with no choking hazards such as beads)

  • Bully sticks, DentaStix, Greenies (no rawhides please)

  • Blankets, towels, sheets

  • Pill Pockets

  • Soft, chewy treats (soft Milkbones, BilJacs, Buddy Biscuits, etc.)

  • Canned dog food (any brand or variety)

For the Staff:

  • Office supplies: pens, duct tape, etc…especially wet erase markers!

  • Paper towels and tissues

  • First-aid items: band-aids, antibiotic ointment

  • Dish sponges, dish soap

  • Paw Safe ice melt (in the fall and winter)

  • Bug Spray (seasonal)

STUDENTS AGREE: Y3K TUTOR IN YOUR HOME CHANGES LIVES

About 2 weeks ago, I tried out the Y3K Tutor In Your Home tutoring service not knowing anything about the service or its tutors.  I needed a tutor to help me with the math portion of the TEAS nursing exam.  I met with the owner and was absolutely impressed and happy with the service that I received.  He went out of his way to work around my schedule.  He accurately observed my strengths and weaknesses and developed a plan of attack that best suited me and my study habits.  He also was able to breakdown each formula and put it into very simple terms/steps that were easy for me to execute.  After the test, I relayed the good news of my 10 point jump from the previous test result to him and he was really pleased to hear about my success.  I am very content with my experience with my tutor.  I highly recommend and I will be going back any chance I get.

High School Cancels Kids Movie. Too Offensive??

Wayland High School in Wayland, MA recently finished mid-year exams. Traditionally after the exams are finished, they run Winter Week in which students engage in enrichment. For the last two years, Winter Week has included a movie watched as an entire school by all of the students.  The movie each year is chosen by Wayland High School Student Council for the purpose of bringing the school together with a positive message.  

This year Wayland High School Student Council chose the feel-good, PG rated, 1993 Disney comedy Cool Runnings, about the 1988 Jamaican Bobsled Team. The story is about one of the most famous Olympic underdog stories ever as people from a hot climate country without snow, prepare for a winter bobsled event.

Hours after the movie was announced to the high school students and one day before the movie was to be viewed, the principal sent out an email saying the movie was cancelled!

 

Following the recent announcement that Cool Runnings would be the movie shown this year, I received concerns from members of our community that raised my awareness about elements of the movie that could be viewed as culturally and racially insensitive.  After researching these concerns further, I felt that Cool Runnings no longer fit the purpose, values, and scheduling format for an all-school event.  I decided to cancel today’s showing. While disappointing for students, I want to emphasize that this experience has inspired productive, honest conversation about stereotypes in the media, the nature of narrative, and subtle, racially insensitive messages as compared to overt racism.   

We have become aware of criticism related to racially insensitive portrayals of characters in the movie. The nature of these concerns is important to validate and certainly does not reflect our mission as a school. More than anything, this event has demonstrated that active and engaged citizenship at WHS is alive and well.  I am proud of the students who have listened carefully, challenged respectfully, and reflected deeply during this experience.

Over 150 angry students sent the principal a reply to her email disagreeing with the decision to ban this children’s movie. The email firestorm caused the principal to schedule an emergency forum with students the next morning. The Wayland High School student newspaper later conducted a poll surveying 115 students. 113 students thought the rated PG kids movie should be shown while only 2 students agreed with the principal’s decision.

Should this children’s movie be banned from Wayland High School or is this a case of political correctness out of control?

Arnold Goldstein, Vice President of Y3K Tutor In Your Home donates toys, bedding, towels, blankets and much needed supplies to the Buddy Dog Humane Society shelter in Sudbury MA. In this picture Arnold Goldstein presents a dog bed and toys to Kimberly Ouellette, Kennel Assistant and Rousey, pitbull mix (one of the dogs and cats waiting for adoption). All items donated were from Y3K Tutor In Your Home’s successful 14th annual collection drive for the Buddy Dog Humane Society shelter. Besides collecting animal shelter items every year, Y3K Tutor In Your Home educates students in all major academic subjects along with ADHD, executive function, learning disabilities, organization, study skills and test preparation.

SAT Advantage

Although the SAT tests are optional to get in to many colleges, high test scores can be an advantage when applying. Many college admissions specialists recommend high school students take the exams only if they expect to score well. Strong scores on the SAT and ACT exams will help you, but these colleges won’t hold it against you for not taking them.
