As a society, we tend to feel obligated to fill every hour of our children’s days with activities. Physical and creative outlets such as sports, art, theater and music are something every child needs, however not at the expense of their education. If school is suffering due to lack of homework and study time because of outside activities, some activities should be cut. Education must be the priority.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOE/SNEAKER SHOPPING TIPS
Here are some important tips when back-to-school shoe/sneaker shopping:
- Have your kids try on shoes at the end of the day or after a workout when feet are swelled.
- There must be at least a half-inch of space between the longest toe and the tip of the shoes. Make sure there is plenty of room to wiggle the toes inside each shoe.
- Always lace the shoes when trying them on.
- When trying on shoes, have your student wear the type of socks they would normally be wearing.
- Walk and run in the shoes on different surfaces like tile or carpet to make sure they are comfortable. They should not require breaking in.

Bad Report Card? What To Do #7: Put In Perspective
Bad Report Card? What To Do #7: Put In Perspective
As a parent it is human nature to say, “The grades on last year’s report card were higher. This year’s report card is lower so there must be a problem with my child.” This rationale is not always accurate. Lower grades could be a sign of a major academic adjustment where students can learn to adapt to over time. This is a new school year and the challenges have become greater than last year. The concepts, expectations and demands have increased. Also your student has different teachers with different methods and expectations.
Backpack Safety
Overloaded school backpacks cause more than 20,000 back injuries per year. Make sure the backpack weighs no more than 10-15% of the child’s total body weight when in use. Have wide padded shoulder straps and a hip strap to distribute weight. Make sure the backpack does not hang below the student’s hip line. Also keep the heaviest books closest to the back.
Does Your Child Really HATE School?
It is estimated that only 5 – 10% of kids legitimately hate school. They may not always like the work they must do, but they usually find something about school they enjoy. Usually students enjoy the social camaraderie with their peers. Think back to your school days and usually your best memories are the social interactions you had. It is usually a sign of a much larger problem when a child absolutely hates everything about school. If your child really hates school over a long period of time, it could be because of one of the following reasons to be addressed here over the next 5 Y3K Tutor In Your Home Blog posts.
New School Year
Your child takes in cues from you. If you are excited about school, they will be too.
Sleep Schedule
Have your student re-establish their school sleep schedule at least a few days before school starts.
School Supplies
When shopping for supplies, get EXTRA STURDY notebooks & pocket folders. If folders rip, they can cause students to become disorganized.
Re-adjusting
We recommend students start re-adjusting their sleep habits about a week before school starts. Don’t wait until the last minute.
