Bad Report Card? What To Do #5: Check The Schedule

Are the demands of an excessive extra-curricular schedule causing report card grades to be low? Sports, music, and theater are just a few examples of time consuming activities students may focus on more than their studies. Sometimes there is not enough time in the day to meet the demands of their activities and put in their best effort on their homework. As a parent, you have the responsibility of examining the extra-curricular schedule and modify it if necessary so they have the time needed to do their homework and study.

Ways For Children To Prevent Water Tubing Injuries

July 16, 2014 By Y3K

Here are some ways for children to prevent water tubing injuries:

  • Wear a personal floatation device (PFD). If a water tubing accident happens, a life vest may prevent drowning.
  • Have a spotter, whose only job is to keep an eye on those who are tubing. The spotter should tell the driver of any issues, such as falling off the tube or rider requests to slow down.
  • Check the tow rope before starting. The tow rope should be free of slack and should not be tangled with any objects. The tube can flip leading to accidents

Tubing Dangers & Precautions

July 15, 2014 By Y3K

If your child goes tubing, there are certain precautions the adult boat driver should take. Adults should be alert to how wide the tube is swinging out from the wake. Look for possible obstacles for collisions. Boat drivers should slow down when towing tubes. Children riding in tubes can’t make changes in direction and when towed at higher speeds, the tube tends to whip wide outside the boat’s wake.

Tomorrow we will look at how kids can protect themselves while tubing.

Controversial Student Athlete Standards – Natick MA

June 1, 2014 By Y3K

Some schools around the country have been raising the sports eligibility standards. For example the Natick Public Schools in Natick, MA have raised the academic standards for its athletes. They decided to send a message to student athletes that academics come first. If a student doesn’t pass all of their classes, they lose eligibility. As a result of the increased academic demands, 43 students out of more than 500 were deemed ineligible due to failing a class or receiving an incomplete. Previously Natick averaged 6 to 9 academically ineligible students per term. The intended result is to put the emphasis on having their education be their first priority.

Students who are removed from teams have to meet with coaches, guidance counselor, and parents to come up with an improvement plan. These students are then ineligible for the remainder of the term as well as the following term.

What do you think of these new rules?

Loses consciousness (even briefly)
