Math: Processing & Intelligence

February 25, 2012 By Y3K

A common stereotype in math is that “a child that solves a math problem faster is smarter than a child takes longer to solve the same problem”. This is not necessarily true. Some people may take longer to process and think through a problem to get the right answer. If intelligence were to be measured by mathematical understanding, then speed would not be a consideration.

ADHD Drug Shortage: Ritalin & Adderall

February 22, 2012 By Y3K

If you are planning on bringing your child to the doctor’s office for a Ritalin (methylphenidate) or Adderall (amphetamine) prescription refill, call your pharmacy before the doctor’s appointment (even if in the doctor’s waiting room) to find out whether the store has your child’s drug and strength in stock. If they have the medication in stock, ask the pharmacy to set aside some pills for a prescription that is about to be filled. A phone call to the pharmacy ahead of time can help students receive the ADHD medication they need even when stock is running low. This is especially important considering there is a nationwide shortage for these drugs.

Cycle of Violence: Children & Animal Abuse

February 20, 2012 By Y3K

Children who abuse animals are often displaying signs that they are victims of physical, mental, or sexual abuse. As a child’s anger escalates as a result of the continued abuse, he or she may ultimately lash out against humans. When a child matures and becomes a parent, the person’s anger is often vented upon his or her own children, continuing the cycle of violence. If you hear of a child that abuses an animal, seek help for them right away.

It’s an inherited, neurological disorder that is first noticed in childhood, usually between the ages of 7 and 10. Kids with Tourette’s syndrome often face the embarrassment and struggle for suppression of having their tics/outbursts in public. This is especially difficult in school when other children may tease them over it.
