Sleep & Allergies / Asthma Insomnia

April 4, 2012 By Y3K

Sometimes insomnia can be from asthma and allergies. If your child has difficulty sleeping due to these, the underlying cause may be dust mites living in the mattress. You may try a mite resistant casing for your child’s bed and pillow.

Sleep & Blue Light Insomnia

March 31, 2012 By Y3K

The blue light glow from a TV, computer, cell phone, or digital clock may be keeping your child awake.  The blue light suppresses the secretion of melatonin (a sleep promoting hormone). If your child has insomnia, have them read a book rather than watch TV or use the computer before bed. Also try covering up digital clocks if their light is blue colored. You may also want to replace the bedtime reading light with an orange light bulb. It’s glow lets you read or relax without actively inhibiting melatonin.

Animal Abuse Linked to Child Abuse

March 20, 2012 By Y3K

Parents who neglect or abuse animals frequently subject their own children to similar hardships. Sometimes these guardians treat their children with actual abuse and other times they neglect them with poor living conditions. For example, Indiana parents faced felony charges after authorities reportedly discovered their two children as well as three dogs languishing in their filthy home. According to news sources, officials first found a tethered dog that was deprived of food and water outside the home. Upon entering the couple’s residence, investigators reportedly found a 3-month-old boy lying near piles of feces, trash, and rotten food. They also found a half-clothed toddler and two additional dogs. In another case, Illinois authorities found 40 parasite-ridden dogs languishing amid 6 inches of feces on property occupied by an Illinois parent. According to news reports, officials responding to neighbors’ concerns found the sick and emaciated dogs confined to filthy animal carriers before confirming that three children—ages 3, 10, and 15—lived in the horrific conditions as well. If you witness abused or neglected animals in your neighborhood, report it immediately. You may end up saving children along with the animals.

Tourette’s, Asperger’s & Autism: Coping with Tics & Impulsive Routines Posted

March 14, 2012 By Y3K

A great way for a Tourette’s student to cope with tics in school is to give the teacher a secret signal indicating a bathroom break. The student that feels that they cannot suppress the tics anymore or feels them coming on can go to the bathroom and release them in private. Then when the student feels they are more under control, they can return to the class without the other students knowing. This is a way of avoiding embarrassment and humiliation of other kids making fun of the situation. The trick also works for Asperger’s/autistic students that need to get let out an impulsive routine.
